"Wait!"
America stops a few feet away from the blue star-shaped portal she had just created. Wong stares back at her in surprise. Worry slowly finding its way to his face as he reaches for her. She offers him a reassuring smile, turning back to face the Scarlet Witch.
The Witch sits on the pedestal, her hands glowing red with energy as Mount Wundagore falls around them. Emerald green eyes meet hers and for the first time in weeks she sees no malice within. Instead all America can see is the gaze of a woman who has lost so much.
"I forgive you!"
The words shock Wanda more than she cares to admit. She has done nothing but torment the young girl, chasing her through the multiverse for her own misguided delusions. She doesn't deserve America's forgiveness.
"Don't give up!"
America's words are almost lost to her, swallowed by destruction around them. All Wanda can see are the sad eyes of a child desperately trying to reach her. Wong has moved, reaching through the portal for America. Wanda silently watches as he drags her back. America going despite looking as though she wanted nothing more than to fight against him.
"I have to go back."
America swings back her arm preparing to blast a new portal into existence. Wong's hand wraps around hers before she gets the chance.
"It's unsafe to go back."
Wanda's tearful emerald gaze was engraved in America's mind. She'd been so heartbroken and disbelieving of America's words. They were so similar. Wanda had become what America would have had she let her own grief win. America can't help but feel lost, an uneasy feeling makes itself at home within the pit of her stomach. She should have done more.
But what else could she have done?
