Part One
Rogue cries out as the bike hits her, knocking her out of the air mid-flight. Familiar kinetic energy burning into her side.
No.
No.
It’s not supposed to be like this. She was supposed to change things. Instead, the tears just won’t stop.
“The names Gambit, mon ami. Remember it.”
The explosion that follows blinds Rogue, the noise silencing her cries. The dust has barely settled before she’s back up in the air. She’s made it to the crater, reaching for Remy’s fallen body as the illusion falls. She falls to her knees in the center of the danger room.
Part Two
Scott sighs, running a hand through his hair as he looks down at the crestfallen woman. Rogue was refusing to look at him, sitting silently in the chair, staring blankly at the wall.
“You can’t keep doing this, Rogue. You can’t keep using the danger room to replay the…” Scott has trouble finishing his own sentence. He’s trying to keep his own feelings in check. To be the leader she needs him to be.
Rogue continues to ignore him, fresh tears trailing down her cheeks.
Scott covers her hand with his, giving it a gentle squeeze. “Please, look at me.”
Part Three
Rogue’s in that damned crater again. Remy’s broken body in her arms. Her vision blurred due to the tears that had refused to stop falling since the fall of Genosha.
She failed him for the umpteenth time.
“Sugah,” Her words repeating in her mind and out from between sobs, “I can’t feel you.”
The illusion crumbles, Remy disappears from her sight. Rogue’s arms falling harshly to her side. She knows who’s turned off the simulation. She knows if she looked up, Scott would be nearby with that sympathetic gaze of his.
“You’re banned from the danger room until further notice.”
Part Four
Scott paused in front of the danger room door and peers in. He sighs in relief, seeing no one inside. The room is completely empty for once. He continues to pass, his feet moving of their own accord.
The manor seems quieter than usual lately, the others keeping to themselves as they try to handle everything that has happened. Not that he’s had a chance to process things himself. He hasn’t properly grieved yet.
Scott isn’t sure how to feel when his feet stop in front of Remy’s closed door, and without thinking he knocks, forehead against the door.
Waiting.
Part Five
Rogue opens the door, surprised to see Scott. Or maybe she shouldn’t have been surprised. It was only a matter of time before he took his own chance to grieve.
“You’re not the only one who lost someone you loved,” Scott’s words weren’t meant to be hurtful. Instead, they felt sad and heartbreaking.
Rogue closes her eyes.
Kurt had told her about the times he’d seen Scott sitting in the danger room’s observatory. That awful night in Genosha on repeat. He may not have been there, but it was as painful for him knowing he was nowhere near to help.
Part Six
Scott’s arms tighten around Rogue, holding her in place. He’s afraid if he lets go, she’ll disappear. He can’t lose her too. As if trying to reassure him, gloved hands card through his brown hair as they lay together in Remy’s bed.
“Ah’m sorry,” Rogue whispers. He wants to say there’s nothing to be sorry for, but he can’t. The words die before he can utter a single sound. “Ya warned meh ‘bout the misuse of the danger room and Ah didn’t listen.”
“You don’t have to grieve alone, Anna Marie. I loved him too.”
“Ah know sugah. Ah know.”
